Print Library has moved to new 11,500 square-foot designer-friendly premises and will house Northern Ireland’s first Speedmaster XL 75 press from July, giving it a 30 percent increase in productivity.
The seven-year-old company has moved 200 yards to virtually double its floor space in readiness for expansion. It currently generates 2 million pounds a year from work with design, graphic and advertising agencies, many in Northern Ireland but 32 percent from mainland UK.
The arrival of the Speedmaster XL 75-4+L will mark a move from B3 to full B2 production. The new XL 75 is Heidelberg’s top of the range 50 x 70 centimeter press with a running speed of 18,000 sheets per hour to match its B1 big brother.
"The XL 75 will be supplied with Prepress Interface, the new Prinect Press Center, Intellistart operator guidance system and a coater which means this press can handle our shortest runs cost-effectively. We no longer need a B3 press. It will run standard four-colour work with seals or metallics and jobs requiring a special will run on the five-colour press," says Director Geoff Truesdale, who set up and runs the company with co-director Michael Thompson.
"The sheet transfer with the new suction heads and air presetting coupled with the impressive rolling power mean we can produce fantastic solids with minimal risk of marking. It raises the bar even on our high quality standards. We will run with AxisControl and will undergo a Print Colour Management audit on installation. We are the first company in Northern Ireland with an XL 75 and closed loop colour and this will be a good measure to ensure our customers don’t need to ever question our colour standards," says Mr Truesdale.

The company adopted Hybrid screening earlier in the year and his has proved successful with plenty of positive customer feedback.
"This investment safeguards the work we have, ensuring our customers have the speed and response they require at competitive prices,” says Mr Truesdale. It will increase our 2 million pound turnover because of its ability to handle a wider range of stocks and to coat. This means increased sales opportunities with both existing and new clients."
The wooden floored, high ceilinged prepress room has a designer feel and Print Library hopes to welcome many customers to the premises to see their work in progress or to discuss new projects.
The company has grown to its current 22 staff, 24-hour-a-day operation without any outside funding or grants but through self-financed growth. It is a company which believes the right technology is vital, but that having individuals who still care about the craft and can enable customers to know work is safe in their hands is still important.
Both Directors visited the Heidelberg factory for a pre-drupa preview of the new press, confirming their order after an impressive demonstration. Geoff Truesdale said of the visit: "We were hugely impressed by Heidelberg engineering and dedication to quality."
