Impression Print & Design, the first company in Northern Ireland to take Heidelberg's new Speedmaster XL 105-10-P long perfector, says it produced in one night shift more work than it had achieved in a week on its  Speedmaster SM 74-8-P.

"I said the B2 long perfector changed my life and the company's potential but even having had an XL 105-5 in place beforehand could not have readied me for the productivity of the XL 105-10-P," says Adrian Glenn, Managing Director. "We are a £2m company with the productivity capacity to double our sales with this one machine."

Adrian Glenn is out at drupa with colleague Ciara Grant, pleased to see the new XL 105 perfector winning accolades from visitors throughout the world.

"Having had the five-colour XL 105 we knew the potential of the technology and with the SM 74-8-P we knew the advantages of one pass productivity. It made taking on the XL 105-10P very easy from an operator perspective and the one press has replaced both others and given us plenty of spare capacity as well. With the fifth and tenth unit we can seal all our work to give customers the very fast turnrounds they want.

"Our average run is below 5,000 but we are making ready in 15-20 minutes, handling a range of paper stocks (coateds, uncoateds, matts, silks and weights from 90 to 400 grams per square meter) and nothing has proved too difficult for the press. It is flexible and the quality is great, even with heavy solids."

The company outputs 1.3 to 1.5 million sheets a week. It has Prepress Interface connectivity, ink line cartridge inking, ImageControl spectrophotometry and Mini Spots, which enable it to calibrate regularly (every three to four weeks) and to work to reliable and provable colour standards. This closed loop colour capability underlines the company's existing reputation for quality that has enabled it to secure, retain and build work with Governmental, charity and private enterprise customers.

"With Image Control it takes only two pulls before we are running sellable colour. Without these ministspots we could be up to three or four pulls. It makes a big difference to makeready and the productive time the press runs," says Mr Glenn.

The company collates real time production data having connected its Heidelberg Prinance MIS system to the press and prepress operations. Its purchases in finishing have been made with future connectivity in mind and in the next year it has plans to add perfect binding to its portfolio of services.

Even staff work between departments. The XL 105-10-P is a one man press so the assistant now operates many finishing machines as well. It is because of the skills of the staff and their positive attitude that Impression Print & Design is able to pioneer new machines.

"Because of Heidelberg's service levels and rapid response we have been able to run with just one press confidently. They have very good engineers and electricians. That combined with the fact we replace our presses frequently (the SM 74-8-P was one of the longest running presses, serving us for nearly four years) means we rarely need support. The XL 105-10P has bedded in easily and without problems."

It is fed by a Suprasetter which has output over 51,000 plates in two and a half years. With its single cassette loading it is able to output 100 plates overnight, having been reloaded at the end of the day shift. The company runs with Fuji Brillia thermal plates.

In 15 years Impression Print has grown from 500-square-foot premises through various intervening stages to today's 21,000-square-foot factory. The press population has reduced but the amount of paper and pallets of finished work required for this production powerhouse has increased. This year the company is confident that its 20 staff will generate sales of 2.5 million pounds by offering a responsive, cost-effective and quality focused design to delivery service. Adrian Glenn's ambition will take it further still.
