Trade finisher Folio (Bristol) has bought a Varimatrix 105 die
cutting machine from Heidelberg which will be housed at Avon Dies,
the company it has bought in June this year to add to its
comprehensive range of niche services.
Avon Dies which was located between two Folio (Bristol) sites
offers a die making and cutting and creasing service. The
28-year-old company became available because the two owners were
looking to retire. They have been kept on in an advisory role for
one year.
Andy Bird, Managing Director of Folio (Bristol), says:
"The previous owners know their market and were familiar with
the Bobst range but when they saw the Varimatrix they were blown
away by it. Its wide stock range capability, auto-stripping and
front edge removal is very impressive. I like the press-style feed
and delivery in particularly. With this machine I believe
Heidelberg has the best front and back end technology in this
market."
The Varimatrix can handle sheets of 370 x 400 millimeters to
750 x 1,050 millimeters and stocks of 80-1,400 grams per square
meter (and cartonboard up to four millimeters thick) at a speed of
up to 7,500 sheets per hour. The feeder can switch sidelays from
pull to push mode which enables a wide range of stocks to be
handled with ease.
The Varimatrix will replace one Bobst and the Cylinders at
Avon to handle a range of die cutting and cutting and creasing
work. Point of sale business that was formerly cut and creased on
hand-fed machines will in future be handled on the Varimatrix. The
company retains a larger format Bobst 1260, two further Heidelberg
Cylinders and some hand fed Platens.
The company will produce its own dies on site giving it total
control of the quality and turnround of work.
Like many other trade finishers Folio (Bristol) has had to
adapt to a market where many printers have bought fold-stitch-trim
work in-house. The company's niche services include perfect and PUR
binding, thread sewing, mailing, miniature folding, pocket
machines, ink jetting and card tipping.
"The Varimatrix will open up new opportunities. The
catchment area for this work is getting wider, even national. The
more niche the service the further people will travel for the
results we want. We believe it will extend our greetings cards and
packaging work," says Mr Bird.
The operators will receive thorough supplier training. Folio
has bought nine folders from Heidelberg over the years and is
lyrical in its enthusiasm for the company's training and support
services. The company offers up to 24-hour production, dependent on
demand.
Mr Bird has bought this equipment knowing that it is JDF
future-proof and the level of networking demand will be one area he
looks at when he visits drupa next year as well as monitoring just
how technology will change what his business, and his customers'
business, in future.
By remaining informed and offering creative finishing
services, Folio (Bristol) finds itelf consulted more often by
agencies and end users wanting to know what can be achieved to add
value or differentiation with various products.
