Printbylaser adds Colour Capacity and builds to meet NHS Demand

21.12.2005
From January 2006 printbylaser will have single pass full colour capability. It is adding a Speedmaster SM 74-5 colour including CP2000 and this will lift its £ 1.8million turnover to between
£ 2million and £ 3million.

In November 2005 Printbylaser was awarded one of the largest Northern Region NHS print contracts as a sole supplier from Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Procurement Confederation with a value in excess of £ 1million per annum. The three year contract has an option of a two year extension.

Printbylaser was one the first companies to adopt tenth generation Polar technology two years ago is adding a second Polar guillotine, a 92XT touchscreen model with stacklifts.

“We have invested in the stacklifts primarily with Health and Safety in mind, but there will also be a productivity gain,” says Managing Director
Eric Stevenson.

The Washington, Tyne & Wear company attributes 80 percent of its turnover to the NHS and it also handles work direct and through print management company Communisis. Now with full colour capability it hopes to extend the amount of colour work it handles from existing and new clients.

“The fifth unit will mainly be used for sealing”, says director Chris Murley. “The demand is for quicker and quicker turnround times and we need to cut and fold immediately without fear of scuffing.

“We will use technotrans’ ink.line cartridges throughout for efficiency and to reduce ink and varnish waste. Automation and workflow is also important to us since our preferred print runs are short medium in length.

“For the NHS we do a lot of pick and pack, and in-house we have die-cutting, perfect binding and laminating. We offer a comprehensive service to all of our customers combining technology, automation and our own bespoke MIS system called ‘Phoenix’. These allow us to offer our customers such facilities as on-line ordering, tracking and viewing of orders. We believe that in order to meet the demands of our customers investment is a key factor to improving the growth of our company. With this in mind we will be shortly purchasing Heidelberg’s PrintReady automated workflow.

The new press will run alongside a Printmaster PM 74-2, installed earlier this year, and a SM 74-2. The printbylaser pressroom has now gone to 24 hour production thus giving greater flexibility and turnaround time for its customers . Currently equipment is being moved around the 13,500 sq ft factory to fit the new press and with the new contract award an extension is also being added. This will give additional storage in the shape of a mezzanine floor to extend its adjacent pick and pack warehouse.

The company will link its Topsetter thermal CTP system to the press using Prepress Interface. Its CTP system and the guillotine have been funded through a consumables deal which means that inks and plates are supplied by Heidelberg.
