Docs Colour Printing is upgrading its CtP system and making its move into processless plate production. In the new year it will install a Topsetter 74 thermal CtP device which staved off competition from a rival Agfa product. The company also trialled both Agfa’s Azura and Kodak’s Thermal Direct plates on its Speedmaster SM 74-5.
“We came down in favour of Thermal Direct which seemed to produce an especially good dot even at low percentages,” says commercial manager Reuben Skinner. “Running processless will take a headache out of the equation; it eliminates any processing and instability of chemistry.” The company, which uses about 700 to 800 plates a month, has funded the Topsetter through a consumables deal with Heidelberg which is now one of the leading UK plates suppliers. An established CtP user Docs Colour Printing wanted to retain the thermal option and also liked the Topsetter option because it is an established Heidelberg customer. “We like the single manufacturer solution. No one is able to blame anyone else if things go wrong,” says Mr Skinner. “Also the investment will be almost self funding in that the savings made will offset the repayments required.” Docs produces business cards through to colour brochures and reports for customers from Bristol and London and along the south coast from its Dorset base in Christchurch.
