Colour Quest’s investment in finishing equipment has been motivated by the need to meet client demand, to be JDF-ready and to fit in with its environmental policy as it looks to achieve ISO 140001 accreditation by the year end.
The company will take delivery of a Polar 115XT and a Stahlfolder Ti52 buckle machine in the new year, replacing older equipment to give it the productivity and speed of turnround required with minimal waste.
The Hemel Hempstead company, one of the UK’s top 500 companies with a turnover of £4.3m, attributes 85% of its sales to print management companies. Managing director Tyrone Spence likes dealing with these procurement agencies, seeing them as an element of the company’s sales force and professionals who know what quality, service and price to expect.
Mr Spence says: “In the last recession some of the companies who survived were those who hadn’t invested or taken risks so they had low or no capital repayments to worry about. But today those who don’t invest will get smaller and smaller because to compete printers must be industrial and have equipment that increases productivity and throughput allowing them to deliver more product faster. We need the folder and guillotine to meet the overnight deadlines required today.”
He adds: “Heidelberg-supplied equipment is a brand the print management companies recognise. This investment in finishing follows on from the purchase of a Speedmaster SM 74-6 earlier this year.”
Colour Quest is progressing its JDF links. It already uses Prinect Prepress Interface for closed loop colour control but it is also looking to link in its Tharstern MIS system to production and eventually to roll out its networking into finishing as well. Buying modern Polar and Stahlfolder technology means that link is available to it and that would enhance set up times and give valuable production feedback via the MIS system.
In just eight months Colour Quest has undergone its ISO 140001 accreditation procedures, fine-tuning policies and processes that were already in place. In buying new equipment Colour Quest does consider green issues of importance. The Polar 115XT features Optiknife which maximises the life of each knife and cutting programmes which minimise waste paper.
