As a district and town councillor Bob Sandall, managing director of BJ’s Print & Design, is more aware than most of the growing concern over the environment and waste disposal in particular.
It is for this reason the Stamford company has decided to make not only its first move into CtP but also to adopt processless plate technology. The Topsetter 74, supplied by Heidelberg, is due in next week to replace the Herkules imagesetter. Heidelberg is a supplier of processless plates as well as thermal and visible light plates, all tested on its equipment.
Having already reduced its chemical waste levels BJ’s Print & Design will now also eliminate the use of fixer from its production process.
“Sooner or later waste legislation will be tighter. I joined this industry in 1957 and have seen many changes and I think it will get harder and harder for printers to get rid of waste in future,” says Mr Sandall.
“Small printers as well as large will have to go CtP because software like Quark Xpress is increasingly hard to use with conventional RIPs. The obvious advantage is that we should get cleaner plates and the register will be good although that has not been a problem for us before.”
The company has an MO four-colour and TOK as well as Indigo and Xerox digital printing technology. The company handles a wide range of general commercial work, primarily for the Lincolnshire region.
