Demonstrations on the Speedmaster CD 102 have convinced TPS that the new feeder will allow it to handle both boards and lightweight stocks on one machine. To date it has had to put heavier stock work out.
The Speedmaster CD 102-5 five-colour press will be delivered over the Christmas break to minimise disruption for TPS. The Greenwich company is replacing a 12 year old Classic Speedmaster which still runs 24 hours a day but is beginning to require more maintenance. Managing director Phil Williams visited Heidelberg’s factory in Germany where he saw a CD 102 running 80gsm sheets at 15,000sph. The press was tested using some of TPS’s more difficult jobs, including heavy solids, and Mr Williams’ verdict: “The results and the speed were blinding.”
For the Greenwich company the press will mark its first move into CP2000 press controls and it will have a colour measurement system, AxisControl. Set up only five years ago, TPS has built a strong niche in exhibition-related work, including tickets which requires fast turnrounds. That makes having a press which can apply four colours and then be sealed in one pass, so that work can be finished immediately, is a real advantage.
“We have returned to Heidelberg because since we set up they have always come up with the goods and the right deal,” says Mr Williams. “We also run a thermal platesetter supplied by them, a Speedmaster SM 52-4 press, a Polar 115 guillotine, three Stahl folders and a Stitchmaster ST 100 saddle-stitcher.”
The company runs a Continental shift system over six days, about half the week for 24 hours a day and the other half for 12 hours a day but this can vary according to demand.
