Rainbow Print Wales’ investment in a Stitchmaster ST100 saddle-stitcher last year has increased print demand to such an extent that it is investing in a new B2 press. It will be delivered to the Merthyr Tydfil plant next March.
A Speedmaster SM 74-5 five-colour press is to replace a B3 five-colour because the company believes that the level of automation makes it possible to run two up B3 as well as B2 work on the press, even for short runs. This press will work alongside another SM 74-5.
Paper is currently bought in B1 and B2 formats and cut down to size prior to print so there will be no increase, and possibly even a decrease, in the amount of guillotining required.
“The fifth colour will be used 80 percent for sealing because of the tight deadlines,” says Darren Roberts, director of Rainbow Print. “We have Prepress Interface, the seamless link between prepress and press in place and it will be extended to the new press. This is our first machine with Vario dampening which will allow us to run quicker and have better control over quality. Quite a lot of our customers are sticklers on quality these days.”
The general commercial printer handles work from runs of 500 to tens of thousands for a market which is primarily Welsh-based but with some work “across the bridge” into other parts of the UK.
“We also purchase our inks and pressroom chemicals from Heidelberg and are impressed with the service which offers good quality and is competitively priced,” says Mr Roberts.
The company has undertaken an internal building programme to improve the logistical layout, giving the Macs-packed reprographics department a new section.
