In readiness for a change in company name and a move to larger premises at the turn of the year, London Drawing Office has placed an order with Heidelberg for a Printmaster PM 52-5 five-colour press and a Prosetter CtP system.

The company move takes it down from the third to the ground floor of its current building and increases its floor space from 2,500 sq ft to 3,500 sq ft allowing it to have a more logistical layout.

Rebranding will mean that the company will make the most of being right behind Stamford Bridge, Chelsea FC’s home ground. It is most likely to be badged Chelsea Printers.

Fatah Abi, and his partner Rhys Jones, set up the company as an outsourcing agency in 1997. It first moved into copying and has steadily extended to become a comprehensive copying, digital and litho house with full prepress and finishing facilities in-house coupled with a design studio.
It houses about 16 machines.

“We took on a SM52-2 in 2001 and that made us a good profit and maximised our turnover,” says Mr Abi. “Now we need a new challenge so we are making our first move into full colour – the greater the risk, the greater the reward.”

The company handles work for major plc’s and international groups based in London and there is a comprehensive set of demands in terms of quality, turnaround and overall service.

“In the last three years we have been spending £70,000 a year on outsourcing colour work so it makes sense for us to bring that in house, and enhance that to £250,000 a year for a steady growth that we can handle alongside our other services,” says Mr Abi.

The options taken on the PM 52-5 include the Prinect Classic Centre, Autoplate and automatic blanket and ink unit wash up. The operator Michael Heneghan who visited the Brentford Technology Top-up in Brentford said that he was particularly impressed with the more automated press where you could control, for instance change sidelays, from a central console.

Violet light CtP was the right stepping stone into filmless prepress for the company which will gain from faster plate production and cleaner plates with the quality that a first generation dot provides.
