Trio Offset is joining the front runners in the race for Speedmaster CD 74 long perfectors. When the machine is delivered next month the Mitcham company will look to extend its product range and geographical spread of customers.

Director Graeme Sibley says: “This new press will give us more capacity and make us even more competitive as well as opening up new opportunities. It replaces a SM 74-6P but will run with the same manning, so should help us improve profitability as well as sales.”

The design to delivery operation currently generates 95 percent of its work from London and counts many publishing houses, events and conference organisers, charities and other businesses among its clients.

CD technology will give the company the high quality, high rolling power status and the ability to print onto more varied stocks, including boards. The long perfector element will open up opportunities in the smaller pagination magazine market and create more contractual work from buyers seeking the cost-competitiveness and speed of turnround that single pass production creates.

The fifth and tenth units of the press will be used primarily for sealing which gives clients work with a better quality feel and allows Trio to push work through faster without fear of marking.

Trio Offset will retain a SM 74-2P and a SM 52-6P as well. Its CtP capacity, a Trendsetter 74 and a Topsetter 102P, means it can handle the increased plate demand. The company upgraded its prepress workflow to PrintReady earlier in the year, increasing automation, and with the Prepress Interface and ImageControl spectrophotometry running across the pressroom it has fully closed loop colour.

Likewise it has kept its finishing up to date with Polar guillotines, four folders and a Stitchmaster ST300 saddle-stitcher so there will be no bottleneck there.

Training on the new press will take place at Heidelberg’s Brentford showroom and also on site in Mitcham where the press will move immediately on to double day shift, working five days a week.
