Quadgraphics has installed a Suprasetter 105E thermal computer-to-plate system.
This is its first venture away from film and is a step taken only after a comprehensive analysis of systems available on the market.
“We have been waiting for Heidelberg to bring out its own CtP device,” says managing director Mark Knight. “We like the upgradeability of the system, that you can have it outputting 14 plates an hour but later if your needs change you can have it tweaked to output 19 or even 30 plates an hour. Thermal was our preferred option because we could operate without a dedicated darkroom”
Quadgraphics, which is based in Newbury in Berkshire, uses 1,000 plates a month to keep its presses running on 12 hour days. The presses are a Speedmaster SM 102-5, a Speedmaster SM 72-4 and a Printmaster GTO. It also has Heidelberg finishing with POLAR cutters and Stahlfolders.
The company produces catalogues, brochures, leaflets, posters and other general commercial work for a very large geographical base.
The investment is funded through a consumables deal, allowing the company to pay off the capital cost as it uses plates so that repayments mirror the volume of work it is handling each month. This has clear cashflow advantages.
