London co-operative Aldgate Press has placed an order for a Printmaster PM 74 and a Topsetter 74 CtP system bringing it a step closer to passing the £1m turnover mark.
The 11 equal partners in the company have an equal say in decision-making including capital purchases. The CtP was selected only after investigations into three short-listed suppliers including a review of brochures, equipment tests and talks with other users.
Steve Sorba, a partner, says: “We came down in favour of the Topsetter 74 because although the engine is the similar to Screen we liked the MetaDimension workflow. It allows us to work in a way we are familiar with and it equips us for the future.”
The Printmaster PM 74 will be the company’s first four-colour and it replaces a Speedmaster SM 74-2. The company was constrained by space at it E1 factory and so opted for a highly spec’d PM 74 because its low pile delivery allows it to fit.
“We wanted to move premises but that proved unfeasible,” says Mr Sorba. “Also we felt that the highly specialized PM 74 was almost as good as the SM 74 but cheaper. There is only a marginal compromise on speed and automation.”
On the press side it was a two horse race but Heidelberg took the lead from MAN Roland. The new press which was ordered this month will be delivered in September and will run on a split shift 12 hour day.
Aldgate Press handles work for a lot of community based organisations including theatre groups, art galleries and colleges, charities, political associations, health authorities and hospitals. Despite its location it handles next to no City work.
