Darren Crake is planning to create an independent trade coating service using the first ever Speedmaster CD 102-LYLYX dedicated coating system in the UK.

He will take on major UK coating and laminating groups. “It’s the right time for the market and with the dedicated coating technology now available (using Speedmaster CD 102 technology but with no printing units) the opportunity to set up my own company has come,” says Mr Crake.

He believes an independent service-focused business will be attractive to printers, especially the B2 market where a more price-sensitive option is required.

“Most trade services are running machines capable of outputting 4-5,000sph compared to this offline coating system which is capable of speeds of up to 15,000sph with virtually 0 percent waste. That will impact on speed of turnround as well as cost,” says Mr Crake.

A CD 102-LYLYX means it has two coaters with interdeck drying and extended delivery. The machine will allow Best Cover UV Ltd to offer spot UV varnishing gloss or matt with precise register, 100 percent UV gloss or matt, remoist gumming, fragrancing, metallics and opaques plus many other options to help create bespoke design projects.

Currently Mr Crake is assessing leasehold premises in the Sherburn-in-Elmet area, close to the main motorway links. He believes initially most work will come from the Yorkshire-Humberside region and will comprise primarily of magazine and brochure cover work but he sees the business extending geographically and into packaging and other niche sectors.

He is still looking for collection/delivery drivers and assistants but has his production, administration and finance positions filled.

He is personally financing the property and start up costs with Close Print Finance supporting the machine purchase.

Mr Crake is from a web and sheetfed printing background. “I looked at MAN Roland and Heidelberg options but came down in favour of Heidelberg because of the advice, guidance and interest given and because the dedicated coater is designed like a Speedmaster CD 102 press with the same type of gripper and same sheet feeding format. We have the technology, the staff and are close to securing premises so we hope to be up and running by early November.”
