Stargold in Kidderminster is buying its first five-colour press to give it more flexibility and faster turnrounds.
The Speedmaster SM 52 is an additional press and, in readiness, the company is building a 1,000 sqare foot pressroom extension and recruiting two more production staff.
Director Bob Jeffries says: “The fifth colour means we can, in one pass, seal silk or matt work or add a special colour and we would also like to trial Metal FX in future. We have no major contracts committed to the press at present buy we expect many of our clients will give us more work, recognising that this investment will make us even faster and stem our prices.”
Currently the company runs two Printmaster QM 46-2 presses and a Speedmaster SM 52-4 to produce general commercial work for a varied customer base, the bulk from the Midlands region.
“We looked at other press suppliers but we would have to see something remarkable to switch from Heidelberg and we didn’t,” says Mr Jeffries.
Planning permission has been given for the building extension so the press should be delivered in the autumn.
The press will run flexible days using polyester CtP plates. Average runs at the company are about 10,000 but Stargold has found that polyester plates run without degradation even on runs of 50,000.
Most finishing is handled in house and the company is comfortable that it has the capacity to meet the additional print throughput.
