PS2 Moves from DI to Five-Colour Offset Litho with a Printmaster PM 52

14.07.2005
PS2 is replacing its Digital Imaging press with a five-colour Printmaster PM 52 with Polysetter polyester plate CtP. Its arrival in the next month will mark a move from flexible days to double day shift working.

The Runcorn-based company was set up in 1995 as a repro house but diversified first into digital printing in 1999 and then into Direct Imaging in 2002.

“We have geared ourselves up for the litho market. Our Digital printing is continuing to expand and the DI has given us a foothold in litho but now we want to build on that. Having a faster press and having a fifth unit which allows us to seal or add a special in one pass is a big advantage. It puts us at the forefront,” says Peter Lewis, production director.

“We recognise that make-readies on the latest sheetfed presses are just as fast as on the DI so the original advantages of that technology have been eroded.

”We were impressed at how good and easy CtP was. To return to platemaking wasn’t the ordeal we had envisaged. We have specified CIP 4 connectivity because we don’t want to go backwards from our DI position so linking prepress to press and having JDF compatibility for future networking was important to us.”

The company’s digital colour production primarily handles work up to 5,000 sheets and the Printmaster will handle the longer runs.

“B1 and B2 printers are very competitive sectors and even web is attracting shorter run work. Every sector is competing at lower run levels. We believe with the PM 52 we will compete against a lot of the digital leaflet work,” says Mr Lewis.

PS2 employs 18 at its 5,000 square foot premises. Its in house finishing includes booklet making, creasing, folding, inserting, perforating, laminating, wire-O-binding and cutting.  Most of its work comes from within a 50 mile catchment area from main towns including Warrington, Liverpool, Manchester, Stockport, Preston and Chester.
