Orchard Press is moving from Cheltenham to Tewkesbury, an eight mile transfer that takes it from a leasehold to a freehold property and gives it three times its current space.
The company had outgrown premises in Cheltenham and the delivery of the new Speedmaster CD 74-5P (in 2:3 configuration) to run alongside an existing Speedmaster SM 74-5P, coincides with the move to the new 10,000 square foot factory.
Also on its shopping list in this round of investment is a KH 66 combination Stahlfolder and a Stitchmaster ST 350 six-station saddle-stitcher with cover feeder. The company was a Muller Martini user until four years ago when it invested in an Stitchmaster ST 100.
“The ST 100 has done its job but now we need a higher spec model to cope with the run lengths we handle and we like the in-built quality checks and the productivity of the ST 350. It can also be used for data collection and link into our network,” says joint managing director Adrian Williams.
“No other supplier can offer the total integration that Heidelberg can. What’s the point of changing supplier when things don’t talk and use common interfaces?”
Orchard is a company which was quick off the mark with its adoption of full business and production workflows. It operates a Prinance MIS system and this is linked in to its production operations to give first rate data capture and management information that means it can identify bottlenecks and be consistent in its pricing and profitability.
The company already uses Prinect Prepress Interface to link its prepress and press operations and with Prinect Axis Control spectrophotometry on the Speedmaster CD 74 it will have full closed loop colour, meaning faster and more accurate set up and consistency within each job and from job to job.
The company’s transfer across to Tewkesbury begins on 5 July and will be completed over the following four or five weeks. Heidelberg is handling the machine transfer, one of its many service facilities available to customers. All of Orchard’s 14 staff will move across to the new site.
The expansion of plant will enable Orchard to further expand its customer base. The company produces a high volume of promotional material for book and magazine publishers as well as general commercial work for local businesses, health authorities, education establishments and retail outlets. Orchard’s business is spread across the country. It has strong local profile but a significant amount of its work comes from London and the Home Counties.
The combination of new premises with the increase in new plant marks another significant step in the expansion of the company.
