Diana Finds a Welcome at Scottish Independent Packaging Firm

08.07.2005
Cameron Linn has taken delivery of Scotland’s first Diana 114 folder box gluer since Heidelberg bought Jagenberg and started supplying packaging converting equipment.

The Diana has been installed with Jagfeed and Japack Pro automated materials handling to maximise efficiency at the Strathclyde packaging plant.

General manager Fiona McKay says: “We researched, looking closely at what both Bobst and Heidelberg had to offer, but felt the Diana served our needs better. We were looking for speed and automation. Both offered that but we liked the Graphic User Interface on the Diana which is compatible with our press controls. We were also impressed with the level of automation for repeat work allowing fast and efficient makereadies. The longer belt on the Diana also means that if we have a smaller run job which we want to pack manually without Japack we can do so at a high speed.”

The majority, about 85 percent, of Cameron Linn’s work is for the food packaging market and runs can be very long, even 1 million cases. It is a very price-sensitive market and although the company cannot command the board prices of some of the large groups it can remain competitive by maximising output through automation. That is what Diana helps to do.

Most of the work through the Diana is produced on 400 to 600 micron stocks. However the machine has done crash locks and run cartons up to 1,000micron. It is using the best glue for fast production.

The company has operators with experience of running Jagenbergs and therefore training was more concentrated on the automation and features incorporated by Heidelberg. The company uses ImageControl on their two Speedmaster CD 102 six-colour UV presses and is a very quality- and service-conscious business. It has also upgraded its prepress workflow from Prinergy to PrintReady.

The Diana range supplied by Heidelberg comprises machines from the smallest 450 millimetre wide Diana 45-2 up to the largest Diana 165-4 1,750 millimetre wide line with economy and high speed options and a range of attachments which make it possible to produce lockbottom cartons, collapsible boxes, partition cartons, double-walled cartons, mailing envelopes, record sleeves, mini cartons and other specialist cartons.
