Dayfold Solvit is buying a Speedmaster CD 74-6LX as the next stage in its development.
Already the company has grown from 30 staff to 42 and £2.2 million to £3.2 million sales in the two and a half years since joint managing directors Michael Shier and Les Abbott-Fryer acquired the company.
The Dorset company is highly focused and determined to target any market "where quality really matters" and to offer both printing and bespoke binding solutions for presentation material. Typically its clients (end users and design agencies) are involved in fashion, jewellery, art and property as well as corporates. All have a need to be a cut above or different to the competition.
"Our press choice came down to Heidelberg and Mitsubishi but Heidelberg won on make-ready," says Les Abbott-Fryer. "We felt the Heidelberg press had the edge and a buying decision comes down to what you can earn out of a press at the end of the day. We are able to change format at the press of a button and the overall changeover is very fast with minimum operator intervention. That was convincing and also we liked the fact that the CD can handle heavier stocks but with the Venturi air system there is nothing that can mark the job as it prints."
The company has had five years of CtP experience and is now using Prinect Prepress Interface to link its prepress to press. Combined with on press spectrophotometry that means it has entirely closed loop colour so that it can work to the standards set out in its Print Colour Management programme.
Dayfold Solvit had already undertaken Heidelberg’s Print Colour Management consultancy because of a need to handle heavier board materials (up to 750 micron). This is different to most commercial printers because it prints bespoke covers which the customer can then bind in-house using a whole range of desktop binding system the company now offers since acquiring Solvit last year. Typically its runs are low, 250 to 5,000.
Today a printer needs to offer added value, quality and reliability and to focus on niche markets to thrive," says Michael Shier. "In replacing an older five-colour with a modern six-colour plus coater we will have a significant increase in throughput. We have taken on three new field sales staff, a sign of our commitment to growth. We must consolidate our position with existing clients by having the latest technology and then we will expand on top of that."
The new press is due in at the end of the year. The company runs a double day shift system and also runs two Speedmaster SM 74 presses, a five and four-colour, and a GTO-2. It offers cutting folding, stitching, perfect binding, die-cutting, embossing, foil blocking, laminating and UV varnishing finishes. And Dayfold’s covers, folders and pouches - including a new impressive bespoke hardback folder - meets the need for higher quality presentation.
