Kall Kwik Kingston Opts for Litho over Digital Colour for Its Market

01.06.2005
Kall Kwik Kingston has installed a Printmaster PM 52 four-colour press with a Prosetter visible light CtP system having found litho more competitive for the type of colour work it is getting.

Bill Vickery, managing director, says: “Our business is changing and the majority of our clients want colour work quickly. Whilst we do a fair amount of digital work, we saw the threshold at which colour litho becoming more competitive at lower and lower run levels. Litho also gives us more flexibility with heavier and more varied stocks. We looked at digital machines and there are a number of limitations. Commercially they are a lot more difficult to finance.”

Now the business will have a metal CtP solution which marries up with the quality it can output on the Printmaster PM 52. Although the initial capital cost is more, the metal plate prices are little different to what the company paid to run polyester. The systems are linked via Prinect Prepress Interface. Automation selected for its Printmaster PM 52 includes automatic blanket wash and semi-automatic plate loading.

“We regard this as a stepping stone. This press will output work for our Kingston and Weybridge branches where 95 percent of our clients are business to business. Our next step will be to purchase a more automated five or six-colour machine. The Prosetter could easily feed this additional demand and can in fact be modified to 76 centimeter,” says Mr Vickery.

The press has been installed at the new 1,600 square-foot premises that took Kall Kwik Kingston away from the high street and closer to its business customer base. The company had run a two-colour AB Dick in the past and reviewed an array of suppliers before selecting Heidelberg which gives it the fast makeready, quality and support it requires.
