Friary Press is taking two new combination folders from Heidelberg the first in the UK to feature a shorter and faster link between the second and third folding units, an ideal solution for magazine printers. They were at the Tamworth Open House this week to sign the deal.

Friary attributes 95 percent of its work to publications including academic journals, magazines, brochures and books.

The two KH 82KL, one with pallet feeding and one with continuous feeding, will replace older 1992 and 1994 models. Friary has been buying Stahl folder technology since 1979, the year managing director Jon Parvin joined the company.

The company will now have three folders with pallet feeders which will cope with the high volume magazine work and the new continuous folder which will be used for the more off beat and challenging work.

Brian Gerrett, operations director, says: “We have the potential to increase throughput by 15 percent and that means we have to increase folding throughput. We have chosen Stahl again after looking also at MBO. We like the speed of turnround, the make-ready and output we can achieve on these folders. The automation makes it easy to move from job to job speedily and efficiently. Clearly where new technology can help us increase throughput without increasing manpower that will be our first choice.”

Friary Press wants any investment to be future-proof. Shortly it will review its MIS system and, although it does not immediately plan to network in the bindery, having folders which are JDF-enabled was important. With the addition of  FCS100 the older productivity information can be access on-line by the production team for real-time production data. The bindery also has cutting, stitching, binding and poly wrapping machines.

The new folders will run on treble shifts, 24 hours a day. There is a wage structure in place at the Dorchester company which rewards staff who learn new skills, learn to run machines they don’t handle day to day, because that enhances flexibility.
